A mangrove forest is a forest surrounded by saltwater in a coastal area. There are about 50 natural mangrove forests in different parts of the world. Mangrove forests are coastal forests, where water rises during high tide and lows during low tide. Mangrove forests are found in the tropical and sub-tropical coastal areas of the tropics worldwide. There were 1,81,000 square kilometers of mangrove forests in the world; But at present the total area of this forest has come down to less than 150,000 sq km. So far, the forest has been found in 102 countries, but only 10 countries have more than 5,000 square kilometers of mangrove forests.

How Mangrove Forest Is Created?
These mangrove forests are usually formed in saline, muddy and partially waterlogged areas of the coast. Due to the saline soil, the roots of these forest trees are quite scattered; But does not penetrate deep into the soil. The tides have a direct effect on the creation of this forest. Indonesia, Brazil, Australia, and Niger account for 43 percent of the world’s mangrove forests. Located in Bangladesh, the Sundarbans is the single largest mangrove forest in the world, which is recognized by the world as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also designated as a natural wonder.

Types Of Mangrove Forest
From the mangrove forest, the people of the coastal area get important goods and services in their daily life. Such forests mainly consist of trees, herbs, shrubs and a small number of palm and herbaceous plants. According to The World Conservation Union (IUCN), there are a total of 61 species of mangrove trees in the world. More than 100 species of trees including Sundari, Gewa, Keora, Pashur, Bain, Crab etc. grow in the Sundarbans. At least 28 of these trees are true mangroves. In the mangrove forest, most of the seeds germinate while they are still in the tree as the seeds of the tree are washed away by the tides.

- Locally in Bangladesh this forest is called para forest.

Largest Mangrove Forest In The World:
There are mangrove forests in several areas along the coast of Bangladesh. The Sundarbans is the main forest and it is the largest forest in Bangladesh. Besides, there is a mangrove forest at the mouth of Matamuhuri river in Cox’s Bazar which is known as “Chakoria Sundarbans”. It is also found in the southern part of St. Martin’s Island in the Bay of Bengal. At present this forest is being created artificially in the coastal areas. These are described below-
The Sundarbans is one of the three largest mangrove forests in the world. It is the largest forest in Bangladesh. The area of this forest including inland rivers and canals is about 6474 sq km. Beautiful forests cover 47% of the total forest area of Bangladesh. This mangrove forest has been formed in parts of Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Barguna and Patuakhali districts of Bangladesh. The main tree of this forest is named after Sundari. Gewa, Pashur, Dhundal, Keora, Bain and Golpata are some of the other trees.
